Gabriel Garcia Marquez, (1927 - 2014), the Nobel Prize winning novelist, lit the world with his magic realism glowing from the fictional town of Macando. He wrote about love and death in a way no one ever has before or since. If you haven't dipped into Garcia-Marquez's world, begin here: One Hundred Years of Solitude or here, Love in the Time of Cholera. RIP master story teller. MATTHEW ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06387040518467600743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5215717837230526104.post-2278092349431042952014-04-01T06:39:00.002-04:002014-04-01T06:39:47.113-04:00Gary A.
A BOOK ABOUT DEATH was launched as an underground, global art project
in September 2009 at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery in New York
City, New York. It was conceived and curated by American artist Matthew
Rose as an open, unbound book on the subject of death. Taking the name, A
Book About Death from the artist Ray Johnson, Rose paid homage to the
founder of mail art and at the same time offered artists to explore the
theme of death through post card sized works in an edition of 500; thus
the “book.” The NYC exhibition was extremely well attended and set off a
series of exhibitions around the world – ABAD – numbering thus far, 27,
the most recent taking place in Australia. With an archival set of the
New York ABAD show (487 works) new exhibitions touch upon particular,
local themes but draw from a growing and global well of artists. All
exhibitions invite artists to mail in their works, usually in post card
format.
Ray Johnson by Stephen Lack. The artist produced a small, 9 x 9 inch painting about Ray Johnson's suicide drowning in Sag Harbor, New York in 1995 based upon a photograph in a newspaper. Ray Johnson died on January 13, 1995. The photograph was probably taken on Saturday January 14, 1995 after Ray's body had been recovered from the water in Sag Harbor.
And Peter was just selected for inclusion in The Whitney Biennial.

Peter writes from Amsterdam: "hey matthew, how is everything? here all systems go. i heard yesterday that i'm going to be in the 2014 whitney biennial. that made me happy except they're showing my pencils instead of paintings. whatever. this new album is getting a lot of attention. i think this dog might hunt. anyway, we're doing a crowd funding thing to finance the tour. the motivation was more just to get some attention and make a clever little video. we can use the money but we're going wether we get it or not. turns out to be a brilliant way to tell stories. and we have a funny new tour poster." MATTHEW ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06387040518467600743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5215717837230526104.post-27066575536380323822013-10-20T07:35:00.002-04:002013-10-20T07:46:46.270-04:00William Evertson: Photobooth Kabuki in Chelsea [226]

“When I met Mark in 2003, it seemed as if years of painting had built-up within him, and during his residency at TIXE they exploded onto the canvas (and the surrounding walls, and floors). It was as if he was painting an entire volume of space, and had placed his canvases at just the right place within the room to capture the very best parts of the three-dimensional vortex of energy and color, line and field, gesture and thought that surrounded him.” -- Janusz Jaworski, curator, “Double Retrospective.”

Left: Installation view at 1133 Avenue of the Americas, NYC; photo by David Manuel.

A block away from where they were created a decade ago, several of these vividly colored works, as well as examples from the artist’s year-long chashama residency in 2004, are on view in the “Times Square and Beyond” section of chashama’s presentation of “Mark Wiener – Double Retrospective." The second part of the exhibition, “Cross Narratives 2006-2012,” features paintings created after the artist limited his palette to black and white.

Mark Wiener’s oft-stated goal was for his art to evoke positive energy, for people to engage, enjoy, and reflect. He embraced the participation of all to the point that he kept his Chelsea studio open to anyone who happened to be walking by, often initiating long discussions with strangers from all walks of life, many of whom became friends, and all of whom witnessed the crescendo of the craft and spirit of a visual alchemist who never stopped reaching for more.
Wiener studied under Bauhaus influences at Philadelphia College of Art, where he focused on painting and photography. Inspired by visionaries Alexi Brodivitch, Frank Zachry and Alexander Lieberman, he developed an open mind toward working simultaneously in several disciplines. While his abstract paintings have appeared in solo and group exhibitions worldwide since the 1980’s, and are found in public, private and corporate collections, he embraced conventional and digital techniques and was well known as a photographer, designer and illustrator and teacher. Photo, right: Mark Wiener in his Chelsea Studio, photo by Giandomenica Becchio.

Never seeing art as a one-dimensional pursuit, Mark was always aware of the community as a whole. His profile as a “public character” was remembered in Peter Frank’s article for the Huffington Post. In addition to images and general information, his website, http://mwienerarts.com/, maintained as he left it last year, portrays his practice and philosophy in texts and videos (at one point there was a live feed from the studio’s webcam) by and about the artist – as it developed, his online “diary” became his true statement.

“I've been wanting to exhibit Mark's work for a while now, and finally have the opportunity with these two venues to show his work with the space and attention that suits his work well,” said curator Jaworski, who also serves as chashama’s program director. “ A part of it is a selfishness - I want to be able to go into one of the galleries and stand there and look at all the pieces. To take my time with "old friends" I haven't seen in a while, and to dive into newer pieces to swim among the currents within them.” Photo: left, Giandomenica Becchio.

He also explained that the larger reason for this exhibition, is “to share Mark's work with an audience that might never think of going to an art exhibit, yet is still moved by the skill, vision, and serious play that lives within each piece. His works have a way of meeting the viewer wherever they are, and suggesting to that person that they ‘go for a walk.’ You never know where you'll end up during one of these "walks," but that's part of the fun, and part of the necessity of going on them.”
In 1951 my mother and father married. Mom was and is great friends with Marie Tavroges Stilkind, and they have kept in touch.

My mother moved to Canada during WWII, and went to art school. My father, John Falk, was a student and beatnik at the time, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology and practicing as a research scientist and teacher (and published poet).

I grew up with a strong interest in the arts, often skipping high school classes to go to the Los Angeles Museum of Art and the local library. After graduation I found my way to ten years of “living on the land” working a farm in the Ozarks. I returned to Southern California in 1982 and began a twenty year career with the phone company. At the end, I was a Systems Engineer. After leaving them, I went to work for Otis College of Art and Design and began my second career as artist.

It was at Otis that I met the best art instructor of my life, Franklyn Liegel. It was he who introduced me to the collages and the life of Ray Johnson. Immediately I was thoroughly taken with Ray’s practice. I still watch the movie, “How to Draw a Bunny” at least once a year. I dream about him. I dream about Franklyn.. (see my posthumous collaboration on page fifty in the book, there is a full preview available to review on line).

In conversation, my mother mentioned that Marie was the first Secretary of The New York Correspondance School! Thus began my friendship and pen pal relationship with Marie.

Over the years Marie has told me many stories, shared clippings and gossip, books and paraphernalia. She has been a constant source of inspiration, and I very much value her history in the arts of the time. I began to explore the world of mail art.

I’ve enclosed a smattering of my postcards for your pleasure. I’ve been involved with a Ray Johnson inspired series of exhibitions, the first, A Book About Death, curated by Matthew Rose at the Emily Harvey Foundation in 2009.

After that exhibition I insinuated my way into curation of a similar event in the Fine Arts building at Otis.
